  • North Iceland

Northern Iceland is a cold, windy and harsh area. It is formally divided into two administrative regions – northeastern (Norðurland eystra) and northwestern (Norðurland vestra). From a tourist perspective, however, this division has little meaning.

The biggest attractions lie in the eastern part of the region. They certainly include the area around Lake Myvatn, the Askja crater, Asbyrgi canyon, Dettifoss waterfall and the island’s whaling capital Husavik. Western part is known for the photogenic Hvitserkur rock.

However, North Iceland is also the best place to hunt the aurora borealis and see a pod of seals or puffins.
