How do you get to Songhellir?

The cave lies near Arnarstapi, just off the F570 mountain road that cuts across the peninsula to Olafsvik below the Snaefellsjokull glacier. It is an F road, so you need a four-wheel-drive car, and you should check on umferdin.is that the road is open. There is a small, well-marked parking lot right by the cave.

Can you go inside the Songhellir cave?

Yes, but the way in is a narrow cleft in the rock that you have to climb down into rather than a walk-in tunnel. Take a flashlight and watch your footing. For a full-size lava tube with a guide and a staircase, go to Vatnshellir instead.

Do you have to pay to visit Songhellir?

No. Songhellir is not one of the serviced stops of Snæfellsjökull National Park, so there is no payment point at the cave. At the park's own parking lots, such as Arnarstapi or Djúpalónssandur, the park charges a service fee of 1,100 ISK per car (prices September 2026), valid in the whole park until midnight.

Why is Songhellir called the Song Cave?

Because of its acoustics: visitors describe a remarkable echo inside. The Icelandic name Sönghellir means song cave.
