Myvatn’s natural pools can be called the Blue Lagoon of the North. They resemble their prototype from the Reykjavik area in many ways.
Modern pool complex
The complex is called Jarðböðin við Mývatn in Icelandic, and uses the name Myvatn Nature Baths in English. It is a modern complex of hot geothermal pools, surrounded by the rugged Icelandic landscape. With unique minerals, silicates and microorganisms, they not only provide a perfectly relaxing bath, but also reduce stress and relieve muscle pain. In the cold Icelandic climate, they also provide a sometimes much-needed dose of deep warming.
It could be said that Myvatn Nature Baths is the Northern Icelandic equivalent of the much more famous complex located near Reykjavik – the so-called Blue Lagoon (isl. Bláa Lónið; English: Blue Lagoon). And indeed, the very design and nature of the pools here is very similar, although there is a smaller range of spa treatments, but also noticeably lower prices.
Opened on June 30, 2004, the tastefully designed resort offers bathers an all-natural experience – relaxing baths amid clouds of steam rising from pools heated from a fissure deep in the earth’s surface, or the experience of swimming in a pool with geothermal water drawn from depths of up to 2,500 meters. It also allows the use of steam baths and restaurants.
