Where is Krafla and how do you get there?

Krafla lies north of Lake Mývatn in North Iceland. Road 863 turns north off Road 1 about 5 km (3 mi) east of Reykjahlid, passes the Krafla Power Plant and ends at the Viti crater viewpoint; the parking lot for the Leirhnjukur trail is about 1 km (0.6 mi) earlier.

Do you have to pay for parking at Krafla?

Yes. Viti and Leirhnjukur are in one paid parking zone - in 2025 the fee was 800 ISK ($6) for a passenger car. You pay once for the whole zone with the EasyPark app (zone 665), not Parka.

How long does it take to walk around Leirhnjukur?

The small loop takes about 1 hour and the big loop up to 5 hours; to explore the area thoroughly, allow about 2 hours. There are boardwalks in some places, but many paths are unmarked - keep away from steaming ground and don't enter lava tubes.

When did Krafla last erupt?

Krafla's last eruptions, the Krafla Fires, lasted nearly 9 years, from 1975 to 1984. The earlier Myvatn Fires of 1724-1729 formed the Viti crater.

Can you visit the Krafla Power Plant?

The plant has a visitor center with an exhibition on geothermal energy. According to Landsvirkjun, it is closed in winter and was also closed in summer 2026 due to construction work, so check before you go.
