Fludir (Flúðir) is a small, picturesque village located in the unusually green for Iceland municipality of Hrunamannahreppur in the southern part of the island, as part of the so-called Golden Circle – an area that concentrates many of the most popular attractions near Reykjavik.
Fludir has a population of about 400 and has become a concentration of greenhouse farming and horticulture. Here you’ll find, among other things, a vegetable market with a restaurant – Litla Melabudin – and a little farther a restaurant-greenhouse Fridheimar, famous for the best tomatoes reportedly in all of Iceland.
The Litla-Laxa River, full of trout and salmon, also runs through the town.
The town’s surroundings are also rich in geothermal landscapes. It is here, among other things, that Iceland’s oldest hot water pool, Hveraholmi, first opened as early as 1891 (swimming lessons were given there as early as 1908). Today, the site of the former pools is home to the Hidden Lagoon – Gamla Laugin A large natural pool with hot water coming directly from the adjacent springs, where the water beats at 100 oC.
