  • Bjarnarfoss (literally: Bears’ Waterfall) is a slender two-story waterfall, located in the southern part of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You can easily spot it from Highway 54.

Want to see the most beautiful part of the waterfall

Bjarnarfoss is formed by the Landakotsgil River and both parts of it have a total height of 79 meters. Thus, for Iceland it is quite a tall waterfall, although it is not one of the tallest, as those exceed 100 m. However, Bjarnarfoss looks great, as nothing obstructs its view even from very far away and you can see it beautifully as it crosses the mountainside.

An attractive feature of the waterfall are the basalt columns standing on either side of it, in the middle of the cascade. However, this most interesting and interesting part of it is quite high up on the cliffs, and it may take some effort to climb the steep slope (i.e., climb over the end of the designated path).

    O
pinions are divided on whether the waterfall looks better up close or from a distance. In my opinion, it can be viewed perfectly without leaving the car.

Certainly, the biggest distinguishing feature of the Bjarnarfoss waterfall is precisely the fact that it can be viewed even from very far away. Therefore, if you have little time – view it from the road or from the parking lot and drive on.

    How to get to Bjarnarfoss

The parking lot at the beginning of the short path (500 m) leading to the foot of Bjarnarfoss is only about 2.5 km north of the famous black church Budakirkja and only about 400 m northeast of the intersection of roads 54 and 574 (their second, northern intersection falls near Olafsvik).

Returning to Road 574 after seeing the Budakirkja church, the Bjarnarfoss waterfall is almost exactly right in front of our eyes – it’s impossible to miss, although it may appear small from a distance.
