  • Hjorleifshofdi (literally, Hjorleif Mountain) is a 221-meter-high hill that contains a cave now known as Yoda’s Cave.

    Yoda’s cave

Hjorleifshofdi is a small hill, but the cave inside is quite spacious. There are intense echoes, but the most distinctive feature is its “out of this world” looking entrance.

Many claim that the entrance, seen from inside, faithfully replicates the figure of the film’s Yoda. Which, as you can easily guess, gave rise to the cave’s modern tourist name.

    T
he name of the cave a bit of a stretch may be 😉 But as of recent, the place really does have a connection to Star Wars. It was in this area that the opening scenes of Rogue One movie were shot.

The hill that is home to the cave was formed by a volcanic eruption during the last ice age. Interestingly, it was an island for many years. It was only connected to the mainland during the period of settlement of the first settlers on the island.

The picturesque, though severely rugged surroundings of the Hjorleifshofdi rock are conducive to hiking. Those who prefer a more rugged experience can also try climbing to the top.

Hjorleifshofdi Cave – tips and practical information

    • The cave is located in the western part of Mýrdalssandur beach, lying east of Vik.
    • The access road to the cave reflects from Road 1 about 12 km east of the town. We reach it (about 2 km) in the immediate vicinity of the cave. The road is gravel, but a car without 4×4 drive can also handle it.
    • Access to the cave is possible all year round. In winter, icicles often form in the interior, and puddles freeze. Such conditions give the place a unique atmosphere and … look great in Photos.

    • If
you are going to the cave in spring or autumn (but also at other times of the year) be very careful! Cars do get buried on this soggy road. If there is a stream to ford – make sure its bottom is hard enough, especially if you’re not driving a 4×4.
    • A visit to Yoda’s cave is a treat for Star Wars fans. Not only because of the distinctive shape of its entrance, but also because the opening scenes of the movie, Łotr 1, were filmed on the beach in front of the cave.
