Stjórnarfoss is a small but picturesque waterfall just outside the town of Kirkjubæjarklauster near the ring road. Its distinctive feature is its two-stage form, interesting rounded shape and beautiful surrounding landscape.
The waterfall itself is not unique in almost any respect – there are a multitude of undersized waterfalls in Iceland. However, it is, for example, a nice, as it is quite secluded, quiet, and a lovely place for a short break on the ring road between Vik and Hofn.
Stjórnarfoss – tips and practical information
- There is a parking lot and Kleifar camping area near the waterfall, providing excellent camping facilities.
- The area around Stjórnarfoss is a great place for a picnic. Especially if you like birdsong, the sounds of a babbling brook and other sounds of nature.
How to get to Stjórnarfoss
When driving along the ring road, be alert. This is because the Stjórnarfoss waterfall cannot be seen from the main road and is easy to miss. To find it, take road number 1 to Kirkjubaejarklauster and there turn off onto road 203, north – towards Geirland. The parking lot for the waterfall is a few kilometers away. You will reach the waterfall itself from the parking lot by walking.
