  • Egilsstadir attractions

Egilsstadir (Egilsstaðir) is the capital of East Iceland (Austurland) and the largest city on the east of the island.
Not far from here – in Seydisfjordur (Seyðisfjörður) there is a harbor where ferries from Europe arrive. It is also in this region that the island’s largest power plant – Fljótsdalsstöð – was built, powering one of the largest aluminum smelters in Reyðarfjörður.

Highlights certainly include the Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss waterfalls on Lake Lagarfljot and the recently (2019) opened Vok swimming pools.

Egilsstadir also makes a great stop or base for exploring the eastern interior. If you want to visit Askja, Dreki, Studlagil or Laugarfell, you’ll probably also come to Egilsstadir – if only for shopping.
