Snaefellsjokull (Snæfellsjökull) is the main volcano of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. The impressive elevation (1,446 meters above sea level) is located in the western part of the peninsula and is one of the more picturesque mountains in Iceland. Sometimes, in good weather conditions, it can be spotted even from Reykjavik, 120 km away. The mountain, as is often the case in Iceland, is covered by a glacier (hence part of its name – jökull is Icelandic for glacier). Its age is put at about 700,000 years, and its volcano system is responsible for creating the peninsula itself and most of the natural wonders found on it, such as the mountain Kirkjufell, the basalt columns in Arnarstapi or the lava field Berserkjahraun.
The legend of the Snaefellsjokull glacier
For centuries, local people have considered Snaefellsjokull to be one of the oldest places in the entire world and a source of mysticism and mysterious energy.
On November 5, 1993, thousands of paranormal enthusiasts flocked to Snaefellsjokull. They believed that on that day on the hill … aliens would land. Representatives of the CNN station even showed up at the site with cameras! Although the evening passed without a galactic invasion, the event confirms the “peculiar” fame of the place.
