The Westfjords peninsula (Isl. Vestfirðir) is one of the most inaccessible areas of Iceland. Located in the far northwest it strongly resembles nearby Greenland or the Faroe Islands, both in landscape and in general life organization.
The winding roads along the fjords are beautiful, but make the trip extremely long and often a ferry is much faster here than a car.
At the same time, the relative lack of tourists, abundant wildlife (primarily seals and puffins, but also arctic foxes in some places), clear waters and deep bays with high rock cliffs make coming here certainly worthwhile.
The Westfjords is a challenging, but beautiful area.
