riðheimar (a total of 5,000 m2 greenhouses) yields an average of one tonne of tomatoes per day and an annual harvest of 370 tons!
Fridheimar (Fríðheimar) is a visitor-friendly restaurant and tomato farm located in southern Iceland. It is primarily known for its fresh, delicious and organically raised vegetables, but the owners also engage in (small) horse breeding.
What is the secret of Fridheimar tomatoes? When growing vegetables, the farm’s employees follow their own all-organic Horticulture philosophy. Everything about the tomatoes – heating the greenhouses, getting water, even pest control – is carried out in a modern but strictly organic manner. The greenhouses operate continuously, all year round, regardless of adverse weather conditions. Visitors to Fríðheimar can not only tour the greenhouses and taste the products, but also learn the details of this specific cultivation technique up close.
There is a restaurant serving dishes based on tomatoes grown in greenhouses. Menu items include:
A real hit, however, are tomato desserts and drinks:
The owners of the farm not only produce tomatoes, but also breed Icelandic horses.
Not everyone knows that they are a special breed. Why? While most horses in the world have only four gaits, Icelandic horses have as many as five. Such a characteristic makes them very popular for dressage. Icelandic horses are also smaller and sturdier than others, and (reportedly) much more sociable and intelligent.
The Fríðheimar grounds include an equestrian center with reception facilities, stabling for 20 horses, and an outdoor arena with seating for 120 spectators.
